Academy Update
Mike Ciancio was at the last Chief’s meeting, and handed out the tentative schedule for the 2008 Volunteer Fire Fighter Academy. The schedule was adjusted to accommodate Eureka’s Fire Department scheduling of the simulator. There will be an additional expense for the use of the simulator in 2008. Additionally, a source for the consumables used in the simulator must be located. UFD will take on the ventilation, overhaul and salvage. Tuition will have to be raised to allow for the significant increase in certification by State Fire Training. Mike Ciancio also asked about a generic release from liability form if anyone has one available.

The fire simulator will be used on Saturday for the academy, and then will be open on Sunday for the County fire departments. Discussion followed on how to pay for Sunday’s use. After some discussion, this committee decided to provide funding for Sunday so that all local departments could benefit from this excellent training opportunity. Motion by Carl Magann, seconded by Greg Smith, passed.

All participating agencies should provide an Officer to oversee their members, (if possible).

Mike Ciancio advised all departments participating in the Academy that SCBA’s will be required on the weekend of January 25, 26, 2008.

Mendocino Community College
Marcus Young announced that the community college is looking at working with local school districts to establish a career in Public Safety program. An example would be the SCRUBS program at the Ukiah High School. Marcus advised that he was working with Nona from MCOE in establishing more programs around the County.

Marcus Young handed out the course scheduling for the Fire Science program through the MCC. It is official now; the possibility of gaining a Fire Science Degree is now available in Mendocino County. Marcus stated that there are numerous opportunities opening up for local training through the Community College including pathways from local HS into the College programs.

Jeff Adair did advise that numerous local departments have training on Thursday evenings, referring to the MCC schedule of classes.

The Mendocino College is researching the possibility of articulating MCOE units to MCC credits. Student Counselors may have more information on this when they register.

SEMS and NIMS courses may be addressed by the College.
